HEALTH MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo has confirmed that a patient is being tested for the Ebola virus at Addington Hosptial.
It is not known where the patient is from or what symptons he was presenting or how he could have contracted the virus.
According to media reports, Addington staff said they had been told the man had recently returned from Sierra Leone. According to the report, the man was brought to Durban because the Health Department has designated Addington as the only KZN hospital to deal with Ebola patients.
In August it was announced the the hospital had an isolation ward to deal with infectious diseases. Staff also received theoretical training in working with the virus and some had received practical training
On Wednesday, the hospital closed off three entrances to prevent the possible contamination and staff had to dress in the appropriate protective gear.
According to a report in The Mercury on Thursday, some staff went home when they heard what was happening, for fear of coming into contact with the patient.
