Police investigate Florida Road shooting

Rifle-wielding criminals hit Florida Road.

More details have emerged on the armed robbery in Florida Road on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Colonel Jay Naicker from KZN provincial communications, a father was dropping off his daughter in Florida Road for work when he was approached by two unknown men carrying a rifle.

“They hit the father with the butt of the firearm on his head and demanded money but he had none. They grabbed the daughter’s bag and fired a few shots and drove off,” he said.

According to Gray Braatvedt, Florida Road UIP precinct manager, witnesses say at around 1pm a black Mercedes pulled up next to the car and the occupants drew guns. “The robbers fired off a few rounds as they fled the scene. No one was injured by bullets,” he said.

The UIP patrol was at the scene within minutes and immediately alerted SAPS to the incident.

“UIP members identified evidence on the road and pavement and secured the area to minimize the disturbance of the evidence until the police arrived and cordoned off the crime scene,” he said.

Braatvedt said the UIP was concerned about the level of crime and was working closely with the SAPS and Metro in crime prevention measures.

“It is important that we are all vigilant for suspicious activity and report anything out of the ordinary to the authorities,” he said.

Any suspicious activity of Florida Road can be reported 24/7 to the UIP hotline 086 111 6113.

Naicker said a case of attempted robbery was opened for investigation.
