Attempted hijacking shocks Glenwood

The Glenwood community is shocked after a gunshot was fired in an attempted hijacking on Tuesday afternoon while school children walked home.

SCHOOL children and pedestrians had to duck for cover when an armed man fired a shot in an attempted hijacking in Glenwood on Tuesday afternoon.

Mo Sibiya was working at a DVD store across the road when he heard the gunshot. “I looked out the window and saw a man in a cap and glasses try to put a gun into his pants while he ran up the road where a vehicle was waiting,” he said.

Darrel Williams of Urban Pizza was in his kitchen when he heard the shot. “By the time I walked out of my shop, one of the men was walking up to my shop and putting a beanie into his pocket to change his appearance, but bolted in the other direction when he saw me. It’s scary because it was after 3pm when school kids were walking home and that bullet could have hit someone,” Williams said.

Glenwood resident, Tyrone Ter Bruggen witnessed the shocking incident from a coffee shop mere metres away. “I was having coffee when I noticed two guys standing against the wall on Brand Road, they appeared fine and it was only when this black Mitsubishi approached the intersection that they stepped out from the wall and moved towards the vehicle. They were screaming at him to stop a few times and he then accelerated. They continued to scream, Stop! Stop! until the one guy took out a gun and shot at the back of the vehicle. As the bakkie drove off, we realised it was an attempted hijacking and the driver didn’t stop and get out.”

Ter Bruggen said the suspects started to panic when the bakkie drove off. “I think they were shocked after the shot was fired because their plan had failed. They didn’t intend on shooting and expected him to stop and give them the vehicle. They started running up Cromwell Road towards Bulwer Road, I tried to chase them and stopped two Glenwood boys to ask if they had seen them. They told me they jumped into a White ix35 Hyundai. By the time I had got to Bulwer Road they had passed the robots and were already gone.”

The community has condemned the incident especially as it took place while school children were around.
