ILLEGAL dumping and litter in Feilden Drive, which was brought to the attention of DSW and the eThekwini municipality in June, has escalated.
On inspection of the site by Berea Mail last Friday, the piles of litter stretching 100m along the road remains as it was when first reported to the municipality, however now, what look like old kitchen cupboards, have been dumped down the bank alongside Stellawood Cemetery's boundary wall, adding to the mess.
In June, local resident, Deon Braun, complained about the litter and shortage of dustbins in the road, saying there was one small lightpole dustbin and secibd dustbin, which was ransacked by monkeys on a regular basis, servicing a 3km stretch of road.
The municipality reported the area didn't have enough foot traffic to warrant more dustbins and that there was a shortage of bins.
The situation has worsened since then. In July, a further report in Berea Mail seemed to fall on deaf ears. Braun said someone needed to have a look at the state of the road and do something about it. He said one person had started dumping rubbish and others had followed suit. There is a no dumping sign on a high branch in a tree outside the local primary school, however this has done nothing to deter people from littering and dumping unwanted items on the site. Another area of concern is outside Kenneth Gardens, where Berea Mail spotted bags of rubbish and an old couch on the pavement outside the property.Councillor Nicole Graham said she had requested DSW clean up the area.
