Glenwood sailors awarded

Glenwood High School sailors were awarded for their achievements at Point Yacht Club recently.

GLENWOOD High School sailors were awarded the Sigma Series trophy as well as the award for the most races sailed in a season which netted each crewman R700, at the Point Yacht Club prize-giving held on 6 September.

Eli and Jethro Brophy-Tintinger were also rewarded for various achievements in the dinghy fleet while Jethro Brophy-Tintinger was recognised for his 2nd position overall in the Silver fleet at the World Topper 5.3 championships held in Wales.

During the July vacation the Glenwood boys took part in the MSC Week 2104 Regatta held off Durban. Sailing Container World Challenge in the L26 class division, skipper Eli Brophy-Tintinger with crew Jethro Brophy-Tintinger, Brendan Humphreys, Josh Cannan, and Gabriel Davies were placed 9th after some very close racing in the light winds that prevailed for the entire regatta. They boys were praised for the way they conducted themselves both on and off the water during the entire regatta.

On the last weekend of vacation, the boys were requested to sail in the Sail Africa Durban Boat Show Regatta. The aim of the regatta was to give novice sailors an opportunity to experience some basic racing. The boys entertained the girls from Wykeham Collegiate from Pietermaritzburg giving them an opportunity to man the ropes as well as helm the boat. After two races on Saturday and three races on Sunday, they were placed 2nd overall.

The final two races in the 2013/2014 season included the annual two-handed race and the Sangoma distance race. Sailing with Brendan Humphries, Eli Brophy-Tintinger tackled the moderate to fresh winds experienced during the short-handed race in a seaman-like manner but with a lack of weight on the weather rail, they were always going to struggle. The “beastly” North-Easterly lived up to its name for the final race of the season with fresh gusts and short choppy seas. Nevertheless, the crew managed to complete the race to Umhlanga Rocks and back without incident or gear failure.
