Berea police have been hard at work bringing crime to a minimum in the area this past week.

Victim identifies thief

A man was lucky to have goods and cash returned after a mugging thanks to Berea police last.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Communications Officer at Berea SAPS, the man was walking along Old Dutch Road last Wednesday afternoon when he was approached by two men who threatened him with a knife and demanded his property. “They took his bag containing his cellphone, jacket and cash amounting to R1700 before fleeing. The man made his way to Berea Police Station where he told the police what happened. Officers accompanied the victim to the scene of crime where the one suspect was still around. The complainant pointed the suspect out and he was arrested and the property recovered,” explained Naidoo.

The 23-year-old suspect was charged for robbery.

Woman catches clothes thief red handed

A Morningside woman was in her Eleventh Avenue home when she noticed a woman carrying a box walking in her yard on Wednesday evening.

According to Lieutennat PN Naidoo, the woman pressed her panic button and the security company and the police responded immediately and arrested the suspect. “When police members checked the box they found clothing valued at R5000 in the box. The complainant identified the stuff and the suspect was arrested for theft and detained at Berea SAPS.

Burglar disturbed and arrested

A Currie Road man got a call from his distressed domestic worker on Saturday afternoon after a man had entered his yard.

“He contacted the police and his security company and went home. The suspect was in his garage when he got home but fled. The police and security company gave chase and arrested the suspect. There was nothing stolen but items had been packed by the suspect to be taken before he was disturbed,” said Lt PN Naidoo.

The 23-year-old suspect was charged with housebreaking with intent and detained at Berea SAP.

Operation yields drunk drivers

Berea SAPS held operations over the weekend where a few people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and few were arrested for possession of drugs .

“The public must be aware that if they contravene the law by driving under the influence of alcohol they will be charged and if they are using drugs they will be arrested.

Investigation leads to good arrest

The good investigative work by Berea police Captain Kevin Stephen and his team led to the recovery of a two truck winch last Thursday.

According to Lt PN Naidoo, a case of theft was opened at SAP Berea where information was given to Captain Stephen about the whereabouts of the suspect and property. “The driver of a tow truck who works for the complainant stole the winch and two way radio and sold it somewhere in the Chatsworth area. Captain Stephen and his members tracked the suspect and arrested him and recovered the property.

CPF meeting

Naidoo encouraged all residents and businesses within the Berea policing precinct to attend the Berea SAPS CPF public meeting at DHS school on St Thomas Road today, Thursday 18 September from 5.30pm.
