Hero brothers come to the rescue

Two DHS pupils were commended by Berea SAPS for their brave efforts in stopping athief and recovering a schoolgirl's tablet in Mugrave this month.

BEREA police have dubbed two brothers from Durban High School brave young heroes after they came to the rescue of a schoolgirl who was the victim of a mugging on Musgrave Road on Friday, 5 September.

Cameron Coleman, a matric pupil at Durban High School said he had fetched his brother Christopher from school and was driving along Musgrave Road just before King Dinuzulu (Berea) Road when he witnessed a man run past some schoolgirls and grab something.

“I accelerated and pulled into a driveway to stop him but as I got out he came around the car and carried on running and tried to get into a White BMW waiting on Berea Road,” he said.

Cameron said he got back into the car and and noticed a taxi conductor who was parked at the corner of the road, hit the suspect with a steel pole, stopping him from getting into the getaway car.

“Christopher ran after him and tried to follow the suspect while I drove after them ensuring no cars would hit my brother. When Chris grabbed him from behind, the suspect pushed my brother into the same BMW which went over Christopher’s knee,” said Cameron.

Cameron put his injured brother in his car and continued to chase the suspect. He eventually apprehended the suspect and recovered the tablet.

The suspect was later taken to Berea SAPS where he was charged with robbery and attempted murder.

Berea SAPS station commander, Colonel Nathaniel Kweyama said the boys showed extreme bravery in trying to stop the criminal. “We are very proud of their efforts to stop and assist a stranger in need,” he added.

The brothers are both life guards at Durban’s beachfront and consider themselves outdoor boys who enjoy spearfishing, rugby and waterpolo.
