THE Gunner's Association Durban branch and MOTHS observed a combined memorial service on Sunday 7 September at Old Fort gardens, to pay homage to the soldiers that fought and lost their lives in World War One.

Ken Gillings Secretary of the Gunner's Association of Durban said the service has been held annually since 1964 in front of the 13 pounder gun from Germany which served in South West African Campaign during World War One. This year is especially significant because it marks the 100th anniversary of the “War to end all wars, WW1”

The service included reading of the Role of Honour, laying of more than 30 wreaths by Gunner's Associations, various Memorial Order of Tin Hats (MOTHS), SA Legions National Field Artillery and for the first time a school (Hilton College) was represented. Two salvos were also fired to pay homage to the soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War at the memorial service.
