eThekwini slams ‘jobs for sale’ advert

eThekwini Municipality has issued a warning to the public not to be fooled by bogus municipal vacancy ads that require applicants to pay a fee on application.

eTHEKWINI Municipality has distanced itself from fraudulent advertisements for “Municipal vacancies” placed on Gumtree and AdsAfrica websites last week. “We would like to categorically state that the Municipality has not placed these advertisements on these sites,” said Tozi Mthethwa, municipal head of communications.

The Deputy Head of the Municipality’s Human Resources Unit, Reginald Mkhize said the advertisements always included a fee to be paid by the applicant in order to register or apply.

“The Municipality would like to make the public aware that these jobs are fraudulent. As local government, the Municipality does not charge the public to apply for jobs. This is a free service. We appeal to the public not to respond to any of these jobs because they are bogus,” said Mkhize.

He said in one case the applicant received an email, supposedly from the Municipal E-Careers site, telling the person to come for an interview and to pay a fee. E-careers is the Municipality’s online recruitment system. The cases the munici9pality has been made aware of are being investigated by the City Integrity and Investigations Unit.

“We are warning the public about these scams so that they do not become victims,” said Mkhize. We urge the public to report these cases to the City Integrity and Investigations Unit on 0800 202020.
