Umbilo thief apprehended

An ADT armed response officer was commended for apprehending a thief in Umbilo.

A would-be-thief got more than he bargained for when he was caught following a break-in at a house in Umbilo in the early hours of Saturday, 19 August.

A resident contacted the ADT security monitoring centre to request armed response after he saw three people in his garden.

ADT armed response officer Christopher Zondo was dispatched to the Che Guevara Road address. Upon arrival he inspected the premises and discovered that the intruders had forced open the garage door. The homeowner confirmed that three bicycles had been stolen.

Officer Zondo patrolled the area and soon spotted an individual along South Ridge Road who pushed a bicycle that matched the description given by the homeowner. The suspect was immediately apprehended and handed over for arrest to the Umbilo SAPS.

In the wake of the incident, Martin Kriel, managing director of ADT security’s east coast region advised residents to regularly check their perimeter security and to ensure that windows and doors are properly closed and locked overnight.

“As an extra security measure, consider installing outdoor beams; if you already have them ensure that they are also activated during the night and when your home is unoccupied. Should you come across a suspect on your property, try to remain calm and immediately contact your security service provider or the local police. Never confront them or attempt to capture the suspects because they may be armed and dangerous,” said Kriel.
