MOTORISTS are urged to take note of road closures in Durban for the International Union of Architects World Congress (UIA 2014).

The World Cup on Architecture UIA 2014 Durban begins on Sunday, 3 August and besides attracting the largest gathering of architects ever held in southern Africa, the event has also provided the opportunity for Durban’s citizens to be integrally involved, through free access to an exciting Fringe Programme, taking place in and around Durban’s CBD.

In addition, the event has provided a launch pad for a number of City urban regeneration projects, each one focusing on stimulating interest in the built environment sector and focus on Durban’s inner city.

To facilitate the various activations and activities, the following road closures and diversions are in place and will remain until the end of the Congress on 10 August.

* Temporary closure of Walnut Road between Dr AB Xuma Street and BramFischer – closed from 30 July to 9 August (closed to traffic for entire period).

* Pixley Ka Seme Linear Park – (formerly West) – Closed from 14 July to 10 September. Lane reduction of Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street from Stalwart Simelane Street to Mahatma Gandhi Road. The road will be reduced from four lanes down to two lanes. This area will become a pedestrian priority zone and motorists are requested to be cautious while driving in this section.

* The River Town Precinct – Closed from 20 July to 15 August. John Milne Road closure from north lane to Morrison Road.

Other areas where the public can be involved, are through the dynamic and exciting Fringe Programme, which will showcase local, national and international talent and take place in a range of ‘Otherwhere’ and City venues and the Trade Expo in the Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC), which promises to offer the latest product developments, technological innovations, and service offerings in the world of architecture and design.
