Rotarians welcome new president

Rotary Club of Durban inducted a new president at a dinner at Berea Bowling Club.

THE Rotary Club of Durban welcomed its new president, Mike Hiron at an induction dinner at Berea Bowling Club last week.

In his outgoing president's address, Derek Hucklesby, wished the new president well for his year in office.

Recounting the successes of the year just past, Hucklesby said the club's newer members were making their presence felt. Of special note were the club activities which included old age home teas at Tuinsig and Natal Settlers, wheelchair donations to Natal Settlers, a dancing event at Stella Pre-Primary and participation in the Rotary Family Health Day, as well as the club's jersey project. Mention was also made of future projects such as the Natal Scottish Gathering, a musical melody evening and a five-a-side soccer tournament.

Taking over the reins, Mike Hiron said he was privileged and humbled to have been nominated and accepted by his fellow Rotarians to lead The Rotary Club of Durban into its 90th year of existence.

“Thank you for your confidence in me. I have over the last 20 years valued the friendships and experiences I have had with our club's members. I understand the fate of our club lies in our hands and we should all be encouraged to grow our membership and activities so that we can improve the lives of the less fortunate that we identify as deserving. My plans are not to change anything that is working, but primarily with the help of club members to enhance and promote the public awareness, image and profile of our club in the Glenwood and surrounding areas and at the same time grow our membership,” he said.

Mike encouraged anyone interested in joining Rotary to contact him on 082 551 9443 and to join the club for a meeting every Tuesday evening at 5.15pm at the Berea Bowling Club, Ferguson Road, Glenwood.
