Cleaning up for Mandela

Friends of Pigeon Valley cleaned up the Open Air School hostel grounds on Mandela Day.

THE Friends of Pigeon Valley organised a clean-up operation at the grounds of the Open Air School's Glenwood Hostel which resulted in the removal of tons of plastic, glass and building refuse.

A wide range of volunteers arrived ready to work, and loaded bakkies with the refuse in a short space of time. One notable incident was finding a Red-lipped Herald under some refuse.

The intention was to complement the existing work on this large property. Earlier, the Friends of Pigeon Valley had planted a large number of indigenous trees. Friday’s event also involved watering the trees under these very dry conditions.

Crispin Hemson, leader of the Friends of Pigeon Valley, said: “What the event demonstrated is the growing willingness of people to engage in work in the community, and to find it an enjoyable and fulfilling project. We will look at further opportunities for mobilising this spirit of community.”
