Durban school gets a helping hand

Port Natal School won the Solidarity Helping Hand Project competition.

A LIBRARY and computer facilities will soon become a reality for Port Natal High School in Durban thanks to Solidarity Helping Hand’s Project of the Year competition.

According to Rehetta van der Merwe, project leader of Project Centre, the project was entered into Helping Hand’s Project of the Year competition. Through this competition the organisation aims to plough back R1,5 million into communities. Funding for the approved projects was determined by means of SMS votes. The more votes a project received, the more funding it will get from Helping Hand.

“Project Centre succeeded in reaching its goal of 500 SMSs and will therefore receive R45 000 from Helping Hand,” said Rehetta.

She explained the school currently does not have computer facilities or a library where children can access the Internet or do assignments.

“Thanks to the funding from Helping Hand and the support of various role-players, this project can provide these facilities to the school. Port Natal is very excited over the prospect of having a centre where pupils can access the Internet for their homework and assignments,” she said.

According to Anel du Preez, project organiser of the Project of the Year competition, Helping Hand can invest funds in various communities through this competition and at the same time show participants the ropes on how to start an effective project that focuses on alleviating, preventing and eradicating poverty and empowering communities in a sustainable manner.

“The projects that were implemented will soon be evaluated on the basis of specific criteria, after which three winners will be chosen. The winners will receive R150 000, R100 000 and R50 000 respectively to expand their projects,” she said.
