Be safety conscious

Residents are urged to be more safety conscious and to be aware of what gives opportunities for thieves to hit areas.

BULWER Community Safety Forum has warned residents to be more safety conscious as house break-ins in all areas and suburbs have increased.

Chairperson, Heather Rorick, urged residents not to leave any windows open when they left for work, as thieves would find a way in, even if there are burglar guards on windows.

“I have heard more and more cases of people's homes getting broken into where the criminals have managed to cut, kick out, or bend the burglar guards on windows and doors to get in – it seems that not even the best make of security gate or burglar guard can stop some of these determined thieves,” she said.

Rorick said that during patrols, members of the forum were shocked to see so many security gates still being left open.

“When we ring and ask residents to please lock their gates we are being told, 'but we are right here, just let them try break in'. To opportunist thieves, a wide open security gate whether the front door is closed or not is a bonus to would be thieves, one less obstacle to get through to get in and surprise you. I agree it is so sad that we have to view our own homes as a would be thief would, but people need to be safe,” she said.

She urged residents to also report street lights that are not working.

“There are areas where street lights are out, some areas more than one street light, making roads and areas very dark and dangerous. Please could residents start checking the street lights in their area especially outside their properties, take down the number or numbers of the street light poles and report this to Electricity Faults. A dark area is a haven for criminals to hide in and strike,” she said.
