LOCAL student, Nicole Nikiwe Potwana, has been selected as one of the top 24 Miss Teen finalists in this year’s Miss Teen Commonwealth SA competition.

The grand finale takes place at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on 29 August.

Nineteen-year-old Nicole is passionate about modellng and fitness and believes her involvement in sport and modeling will help bring about the change she wants to be and see in the world.

“The amazing advancement of technology has brought me one step closer to achieving my dreams. I found out about the pageant through browsing the internet and looking for modeling competitions for teens. I read about the Commonwealth SA pageants as a whole and downloaded and sent my application form,” she said.

Nicole was excited to receive an email asking her to attend a workshop on 10 May at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg. During the workshop all entrants went through a mini interview.

“The next day the finalists were announced and wow! my name appeared in the top 24 Miss teen finalists list. I was close to realising my dream! It is an achievement on its own. I have never been this positive in myself. If God did not have a purpose for me, He would not have let me get this far,” she said.

As a finalist, Nicole has to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and brand herself through media.

“Upon winning, I am going to change the mindset of people about street kids and prostitution. Who knows, maybe the cure for incurable diseases lies in the hands of those neglected? Remember ‘dynamite comes in small packages’,” she said.

Nicole is the youngest of three siblings. She is originally from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape but relocated to KZN this year to further her studies.

Nicole is very interested in gym and sport as a whole. She enjoys exercising and loves reading in her free time.

To support her journey use the SMS line and vote for her. SMS her name and surname to 42899. Each SMS costs R3 and a percentage of this will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust.
