80 injured in Durban train smash

Two trains collided at Berea Road Station last night injuring 80 commuters.

APPROXIMATELY 80 passengers were injured when two trains collided at Berea Station last night.

According to reports a train had stopped outside Berea Station and was waiting at a red light when another train slammed into the back of it.

Multiple emergency personnel, including Durban search and rescue, fire services and ambulance services converged on the scene to triage those who had sustained moderate to minor injuries.

Max Magnussen of the Durban Fire Department said emergency services battled to reach the site by vehicle and had to carry equipment up stairs and over an overhead bridge to reach the injured.

No fatalities were reported and the lines around the collision were shut down while emergency services attended to those at the scene.

The KZN Department of Transport sent its sympathies to those who were injured in the crash and said an investigation into the incident would be conducted.

Last year, a similar incident occurred at Berea Road Station where 12 people were injured.
