School holidays marred by collisions

A woman was injured after she crashed into a tree in Glenwood on Sunday afternoon and 16 were injured in an N3 crash later that night.

ACCIDENTS marred the beginning of the school holidays throughout Durban and surrounding areas over the weekend.

The most recent was a serious collision on the N3 Durban bound just after The Pavilion at around on Sunday night.

According to Rescue Care’s operations director, Garrith Jamieson, paramedics found total chaos when they arrived on scene. “A bakkie carrying sixteen people had collided with a truck before rolling several times ejecting most of its passengers onto the roadway,” Jamieson said.

Rescue Care paramedics had to call for more ambulances to assist with the number of people injured. “Once all the injured had been stabilised on the scene they were transported to various Durban hospitals,” he said.

At this stage it is unclear what caused the major collision, however police were on the scene and will investigate further.

Earlier on Sunday, Rescue Care was called to Glenwood where a woman sustained moderate injuries after the vehicle she was driving collided with a tree around 3pm at the intersection of Manning Road and Penzance Road.

“On arrival paramedics found the injured woman seated in her vehicle. They assessed her and found that she had sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision. Paramedics stabilised the woman before carefully extricating her from the vehicle. Once she was extricated the patient was placed on a special spinal stretcher to avoid any further injury,” said Jamieson.

The injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital.

“It is unclear what caused the single vehicle to lose control and collide with the tree, however authorities were on scene to investigate,” he said.
