Thieves target Clark Road

A sex worker alerted the police to a housebreaking in progress in Clark Road

RESIDENTS of Clark Road have been hit badly by a spate of housebreaking incidents over the past two weeks.

Resident Lindsay Ladeira said she had been the victim of three break-ins over a period of 10 days. According to Laeira, on Wednesday last week, eight properties in Clark Road and surrounding areas were broken into. She said robbers were gaining access to homes by opening garage doors.

“It’s crazy! From Bulwer Road down there has been a lot of activity. I am really shocked, it is very concerning. I want to know why security companies and the police are not patrolling these areas,” she said.

Resident, Mandy Atherstone, said she had been woken up at 2.15am by her next door neighbours after two men were spotted in her back property, after they gained access by crawling her garage roller door.

“While the robbery was in progress Inspector Shezi from Metro Police was on patrol and was waved down by a prostitute who told him something was happening at our property.

“The police then saw Mr Ngcobo from Blue Security and told him what was happening. They drove to our property and caught the guys running up the road with my daughter’s bicycle. They caught the two men and our items were recovered,” she said.

According to Heather Rorick from Bulwer Community Safety Forum (BCSF), criminals are striking around 3am in the mornings, when people were in deep sleep.

“What concerns us (BCSF) the most when we are out on patrol, is that there are still homes that do not have lighting in their yards, so their homes are so secluded in the dark and very difficult to see anyone lurking or hiding in their yards or close by.

“We also watch people come home, drive into the driveway or park outside their garage, then sit and chat on their cellphone, or take the time getting out their car.

“All this while the driveway gates are standing open, giving criminals enough time to get in and overpower the driver and passengers and find their way then into people’s homes to rob them,” she said.

She also said far too many garage doors and gates were being left open, even in complexes.

“If we are noticing this then so are criminals. It has got to the stage where when you leave home at any time of day or night, you have to close all windows, doors and gates, as these criminals will find a way into your home,” she said.
