A homeless person allegedly involved in a recent assault on a security guard at Woolworths in Bulwer Road has been arrested.

Seucrity guards at Woolworths were tipped off on Sunday that the vagrant had been spotted begging at the robots further down Bulwer Road. They drove down and picked him up. The Umbilo SAPS were called who came out and arrested him.

“Well done to Woolworths security and also to Woolworths for upping their security outside their store and for helping to chase away these vagrants from hanging around and worrying customers. This is such good news as there was a huge outcry after the security guard was attacked,” said Heather Rorick of the Bulwer Community Safety Forum.

It is alleged the vagrant threw a glass bottle at the security guard who sustained cuts as a result.

Woolworths head office confirmed that a bottle was thrown at one of the security guards during a routine patrol outside the store.

“The safety of our customers and employees is our highest priority and as a tenant on Bulwer Road, we have joined other businesses in the area to try and address issues like this. As a precautionary measure, our security personnel as well as police have increased patrols of the area. We are also engaging our landlord and intend to engage the municipality further. As a further step we have also engaged NGO’s like I Care to help address the related social issues like substance abuse and homelessness,” said a representative.

According to Heather Rorick, she and ward councillor, Nicole Graham would be meeting with Woolworths and Metro Police to discuss this issue. She also urged residents not to give to them as they are encouraging them to stay in the area.
