Seniors clinic moved to McCord

A response has been received from the Health Department regarding the future of the Glenumore Senior Citizen's Centre.

THE issue of Glenumore Senior Citizen’s Centre has been discussed in the district and arrangements have been made with McCord Hospital to assist with their health needs.

This comes as the response from the Health Department, following last week’s article about the clinic which services the elderly in Glenwood, Glenmore and Umbilo, and is run at the Glenwood Presbyterian Church.
The clinic, which was started in 1985, is facing closure.

Desmond Motha, spokesman for the KZN Health communication, said: “The McCord hospital has agreed to the request (for patients to attend the clinic at the hospital) and the arrangements were made by the district chronic disease coordinator together with the manager of the centre to meet with McCord hospital to discuss the support of the centre. This includes all the services which were rendered by the doctor.”

At Glenumore clinic, around 100 patients were seen on a Monday and services such as foot care, blood pressure, blood sugar and urine tests as well as assessment of new patients were provided.

Paddy Thornton, chairman, said she didn’t know how the McCord Hospital was going to cope having to see the extra 480 patients they see at the clinic.

“It would all be sorted out if the department would just give us a doctor for three hours on a Monday morning,” said Paddy, who said the group at the clinic felt it was unfair they weren’t being able to make any suggestions about what could be done.
