Caught by ‘eye in the sky’

Three would-be car thieves caught on CCTV footage.

THREE security guards had carefully thought of a back-up story to tell police, just in case they got caught, when they stole a car in Springfield Park over the long weekend. Little did they know that there was an ‘eye in the sky’ watching their every move.

According to Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo, as Springfield Park company readied itself for the long weekend, the owner parked the company car inside the gated property and ensured all doors and windows were locked.

The keys were then handed to another guard to keep over the weekend.

“On Saturday 22 March the business owner received a call from a security company who informed him the company car was stolen and was involved in a crash along Sea Cow Lake Road. When he arrived at the scene he saw four security guards, two night shift officers and two day shift officers,” Lt Naidoo said.

One of the night shift officers told the owner he had arrived at work for his shift when he noticed that one of the three guards (that were on the business premises for their day shift) was tied up at the back of the building.

According to the police report, the tied up guard alleged that thieves, who took off with the car, had tied him up.

The night shift officer who found the guard allegedly tied up then contacted the police.

“Upon further investigation, the owner of the company looked through CCTV footage and saw t the three guards who were on duty that day were all involved in stealing the company vehicle,” Lt Naidoo said.
