Gandhi Salt March 10th anniversary

The tenth annual Gandhi Salt March this Sunday morning is expecting to see 5000 participants embark on the 16km walk for peace, non-violence and human values.

THE annual Mahatma Gandhi Salt March which takes place on Sunday, 6 April is attracting a large number of participants for its tenth anniversary.

Kidar Ramgobin of the organising committee, said the re-enactment of the Salt March in South Africa is a demonstration of people’s power to peacefully engage in mass action campaigns to overcome the negativity that riddles our society. “The Salt March is not a race or walk but a march promoting peace, non-violence and human values. In the spirit of ubuntu,we call on all concerned citizens to join us to promote the ideals of a peaceful society that our great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela and many others strove for,” he added.

Ramgobin said organisers were expecting 5000 participants for the tenth anniversary march. There is no entry fee. Participants must report to the Athletics Stadium opposite Moses Mabhida Stadium at 5.30am, where buses will transport them to Phoenix Settlement. The buses will start transporting participants from 5am and the last bus leaves at 6am. Ample parking is available for vehicles at the Kings Park Athletic Stadium. Medals, T-shirts and lunches will be provided and refreshments and toilets will be en route
