Suspended students reinstated

The suspension of DUT students has been lifted.

AN agreement has been reached with suspended students from Durban University of Technology yesterday (11 March), after they pleaded guilty to charges laid against them.

According to Prof Ahmed Bawa, vice-chancellor and principal, formal charges were laid against the students who were suspended for their role in the recent violent protests at DUT. These students happened to be members of the Durban branch of the SRC and were suspended two weeks ago.

Bawa said: “When the charges were presented yesterday, the suspended students, who had legal representation present, decided to enter a plea bargain. They admitted their guilt. As such, the university accepted their admission of guilt and reached an agreement with the students concerned. Their suspension was lifted with immediate effect so that they can continue with their classes.”

They were also allowed to resume their positions on the SRC until their terms come to an end in September this year.
Bawa said they had been reinstated under very strict conditions, which if violated, would result in their immediate suspension and subsequent expulsion from the university.
