Father Tully and team tackle Argus to raise funds

A Catholic priest together with a team of cyclists will ride the gruelling 109km Cape Argus Cycle Tour to raise funds for the Denis Hurley Centre.

IN an effort to raise much-needed funds for the Denis Hurley Centre, a team of nine eager cyclists form Emmanuel Cathedral, including Father Stephen Tully will take part in a sponsored ride for the 109km Argus Cycle Tour in Cape Town on 9 March.

The support team of the Denis Hurley Centre has come up with creative, original and sporty ways of raising money needed to finish building the centre, including walking the Camino (both Fr Stephen Tully and Monsignor Nadal) and now cycling the Argus.

The Denis Hurley Centre is a new building which is currently being constructed alongside Emmanuel Cathedral in the Durban CBD close to the busiest road and rail transport hub in the province. This multi-purpose community facility will promote extensive outreach and training for the homeless, unemployed and refugees, and provide primary health care as well as community building programmes in one of the most diverse, challenging and impoverished neighbourhoods of downtown Durban.

The Denis Hurley Centre is the result of years of extensive, committed and participative fundraising. Although construction of the new centre has started, more than R5 million still needs to be secured in order to complete the building, so 2014 promises to be a busy year of focused fundraising in order to accomplish the task.

The Denis Hurley Centre will be a legacy project honouring Archbishop Denis Hurley OMI who was bishop and archbishop of the city from 1947 to 1992 and played a significant role in opposing apartheid and promoting the vision of a just society.

The public is invited to support the cycling team for the Argus led by Patrick Wilson, that will ride a gruelling 109kms on the day to raise funds for the Denis Hurley Centre.
