Bullets fly in Badgers robbery

Residents say the Davenport area is like the 'wild west' following a police shootout.

TWO men were shot following a robbery at Badgers in Helen Joseph (Davenport) Road early on Wednesday morning.

According to manager, Tracy Robinson, Blue Security notified her of a robbery at the premises at 6.10am, where, according to eye-witnesses, seven men had hit the business.

“I arrived at 6.20am and the robbery had already taken place. They broke the front door and the office door and took TVs, computer, cigarettes and even a six pack of Red Bull and seven cans of Coke!” said Robinson.

She said an eye-witness had run down to the Metro Police hut at Davenport Square to notify the police of the robbery.

“As they were leaving, a Metro policeman shot one of the robbers outside the front gate. He was dragged into the car by the others. As they were driving away, another man was shot by Metro. Blue Security and Metro Police gave chase, however the men managed to get away,” she said.

A grey Toyota Yaris, one of the four get-away cars, all believed to be hijacked vehicles, was abandoned at the Lena Ahrens (Manning) Road intersection.

According to Robinson, the robbers tried to break into Yossi’s as well and the footage was captured on CCTV.

“The Umbilo SAPS believe this is a syndicate working in the area. I am just so grateful no one was at the premises at the time. The safety of my staff counts more than anything. It was a horrible thing, I feel invaded, but we’re all okay and we will be back to business tomorrow, in our usual positive way! I also just want to thank our customers for their calls and their concern, it is much appreciated,” said Robinson.

The local business and residential community have raised concerns about the high incidence of crime and lack of security in the area in recent weeks.

  1. The vehicle that was left at the top off Davenport was in fact a black Toyota Run x and not a silver Toyota as mentioned.
