Berea pupils to perform at Commonwealth Games

Local pupils need sponsorship to perform at the Commonwealth Games.

BEREA school pupils and RSPA Theatre School students, Emily Spencer and Christopher Turner, have been selected by the National Theatre Scotland to represent South Africa and perform with the International Performing Company, at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Countries represented by the International Performing Company are Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Jamaica, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Wales and Scotland.

A team of four pupils from RSPA will travel to Scotland in July and will be involved in one of five devising groups. These groups will work with professional directors, creative specialists, composers, designers, choreographers and technicians to create interactive installations and site-responsive street theatre at the Commonwealth Games.

Emily and Chris say they will use this opportunity to develop their performing arts techniques and learn as much as they can from this once in a lifetime opportunity.

RSPA Theatre School Director Gill Brunings said: “The National Theatre of Scotland will cover accommodation, training and food, whilst our students are there, but we urgently need help in raising funds to cover flight and visa costs.”

If there are local businesses who would like to be involved with a fundraiser for the arts to help Chris and Emily get to Glasgow, contact Gill Brunings on 083 326 3257 or gill@rspa.co.za
