Students march on DUT

Students took to the streets again today to protest financial aid issues at DUT.

ABOUT 500 students marched from the ML Sultan Campus to the Steve Biko Campus of Durban University of Technology (DUT) this morning,24 February.

At the moment, the protest is limited to the Durban campus.

Prof Ahmed Bawa, vice-chancellor and principal at DUT said: “We have not received a memorandum of demands from the SRC, but we have received a list of concerns relating primarily to financial aid issues for returning students. We have met with the SRC and we are planning to meet with them again tomorrow, 25 February.”

In terms of security, Prof Bawa said DUT had a small contingent of SAPS on campus and would use the Gatherings Act as a basis to regulate the demonstrations.

“We did lose some lecture time in the faculties of health sciences, accounting and informatics as well as management sciences. We have not received reports with regards to injuries,” said Prof Bawa.
