Strangled dog dumped

Animal lovers are outraged by the dumping of a dog that had been strangled outside a Glenwood home last week.

A Glenwood animal lover made a grisly discovery on the pavement, in Alan Paton Road on Friday afternoon.

Kayleigh Kirsten had her mother drop her off at a friend’s place on Alan Paton (MacDonald) Road when the two discovered the remains of a strangled dog stuffed in a municipal orange bag on the side of the road.

“When we looked in the bag, we saw that a belt had been tied around its neck and the eyes had popped out. At first we thought it was a young dog, but its hard to tell, looked like a cream bull terrier.”

The animal lover was livid when nothing could be done about the incident. “I was horrified that the SPCA did not regard this as their affair and instead referred me to DSW to dispose of the dog. I feel there should have at least been an investigation. It’s a murder in my eyes, a terrible crime committed against one so defenceless,” she said.

Kirsten hoped telling others about the incident would help get the message across about animal cruelty and also let the owners know about their dog.

“I don’t know how anyone can do something like this. It is disgusting how anyone can disregard an animal like this. I don’t even know if someone is still looking for their dog,” said an outraged Jo Gaby, whose gardener found the body of the dog outside her home.

Meanwhile Durban and Coastal SPCA marketing manager, Caroline Smith said, “Apparently these circumstances were not fully explained by the caller. If the fact that the dog had a belt tied around its body had been conveyed we would have sent an Inspector to collect the dog. It is usually the mandate of DSW to collect the bodies of dead dogs. However in extenuating circumstances like these we would become involved and investigate further, that is, where deliberate cruelty is involved.”
