Motorists ignore ‘no parking’ rule

More needs to be done to stop illegal parkers in Rick Turner Road.

DESPITE signage and a red ‘no parking’ line on Rick Turner Road outside the takeaway outlets, motorists still insist on parking in the left-hand lane.

The matter has been highlighted in Berea Mail on a number of occasions. Last year, staff at Holy |family College together with local residents raised fears that the illegal parking posed danger to children crossing the road and passing vehicles. The illegal parking also results in traffic being backed up in peak hours as only one lane is operational.

According to Metro Police’s Morgan Subramoney, Metro officers prosecuted offenders on an irregular basis.

“Unfortunately this is all we can do unless the city engineers place some bollards which will physically restrain motorists from parking there,” he said.

Carlos Esteves, deputy head of Road System Management at the eThekwini Transport Authority, said: “I am very familiar with this situation and I don’t think bollards would be the preferred option if we are to lose that lane permanently. It actually affects the efficiency of the signals at that intersection. I will get my staff to re-look the matter. It is unfortunate that a few motorists are so selfish that they chose not to comply thereby making the situation less effective for everyone else.”

He said parking for the takeaways was available around the corner, in Farmon Road.
