The search is on for a superstar Jesus

THE World Gospel PowerHouse is giving both aspiring and skilled stage actors the opportunity to take part in its groundbreaking Gospel musical, Maria! and an audition will be held at the SABC studios in KE Masinga Street (Old Fort) on 29 February from 9am.

The story will also creatively celebrate the 20 years of democracy in SA and the role that Gospel music has played in promoting unity, social cohesion, moral regeneration and inspiration.

WGPH’ s president, Zanele Mbokazi, said, “We first spoke about this historic initiative back in 2011, at the 4th Crown Gospel Music Awards but we had to postpone it. This is a story of the Son, Jesus, as told by, Maria. The play will be enhanced by dance, acting and Gospel music from various artists.”

Although the play will debut in KZN at the Playhouse it will later be shown in different theatres around the country including the Winston Churchill in Pietermaritzburg,  the State Theatre in Pretoria, Arts Cape Theatre in Cape Town and Pacoff Theatre in Bloemfontein. Plans to showcase Maria! Abroad are still underway.

Syanda Mwandla, Crown Gospel Music Awards choreographer  and Edmund Mhlongo, theatre guru from Kcap will be behind the production of Maria! They invite anyone who can act on-stage, including actors, dancers and singers.

“We are looking for people who are passionate and talented. More than anything, we are in search of that one person who will play Jesus,” added Mwandla.
