Railways too strong for Quins

Umbilo Harlequins first team lost to Railways in a Challenge League match.

UMBILO Harlequins Cricket Club was engaged in four official matches and a fifth team friendly match on Sunday 26 January.

Quins first side travelled to Maidstone, Tongaat North, for a Challenge League match.

Quins elected to field first. Railways bashed some wayward deliveries during the first three overs and their batsmen appeared well acquainted with their adverse conditions, but two successive leg before wicket appeals by paceman Kevin Kettle were successful, putting Quins ahead for the first and only occasion during this match, as Railways middle order soon accumulated considerable runs in their batting quest, aiding their team to a commendable tally of 209 runs all out in 42 overs.

Right arm wrist spinner Dieter Liebenberg was Quins’ most economical bowler claiming two wickets for 32 runs in 10 overs and Kalvin Venter took two wickets for 43 runs in six overs.

A middle order Railways batsman played a soft handed shot leaving the ball dead on the wicket while attempting a run but Quins wicket keeper Tyrelle Smith chased down this dead ball and ran out the striking batsmen with a direct dismantling of the stumps at the bowler’s end.

Quins opener Kevin Kettle struck 13, middle order batsmen George Smith and Tyrelle Smith scored 11 each, Andre Viljoen top scored for the second consecutive week with 31 superlative runs. Quins final batsman succumbed with the team score on 92 runs, 117 runs short of their oppositions total.

Other team results: Quins 2 vs Tongaat 2: Quins 2 192 for nine wickets (Mark Goviea 54 runs, Shane Manicom 23 runs, Andre Nepgen 22 runs, Sheldon Spindler 15 runs and Adam Mather 13 runs, Adam Mather 6/18, Mark Goveia 3/29). Tongaat 2 105 runs in 25 overs. Quins 2 won by 87 runs.
