DHS welcomes new blood

DHS Grade 8’s made the most of their first day at the school on Monday.

DURBAN High School welcomed around 200 pupils into Grade 8 on Monday, 13 January for their first day of induction.

While the school year officially started on Wednesday, DHS planned for Grade 8 pupils to start the year off early by learning what it is to be a representative of DHS.

The day started off with headmaster, Mr Erasmus, welcoming the group into the “brotherhood of DHS” which will be made official after the annual bell-ringing ceremony on Wednesday.

As one of the oldest schools in Durban, DHS staff are proud of the school’s heritage and informed the group they would be part of the 150th birthday of the school in 2016 and thus part of the heritage of the school. During a speech made by the headmaster, each boy was encouraged to make the most of their high school career.

“Don’t ever regret using the opportunities DHS has to offer. DHS will give to you and you will be expected to give back, by investing time in taking part in sporting, cultural or academic activities and in doing so uphold the school’s name at all times,” he said.

After the initial welcome, the boys were split into groups and were given a tour of the school before participating in a number of sporting trials. The nervous faces that had first walked into the school seemed to subside once they were involved in all the activities.
