Police issue public warning on armed robberies

Umbilo police warn the public to be aware of an unusual armed criminal duo that have used the same method to rob two men of their cellphones in the area.

UMBILO police have issued a warning to the public about two armed robbers who have gotten away with two cellphones after identical cases of armed robbery in the Umbilo policing precinct.

According to Umbilo communications officer, Sergeant Beverly Manqele, the incidents occurred on Monday and Tuesday last week.

“On the first day, a man reported that two men in a white Golf One stopped and asked him for directions while he was walking along Sarnia Road. The driver of the vehicle allegedly said they were lost and asked if they could borrow the pedestrian’s cellphone. Before the man could say no, one of the suspects stuck a gun against his stomach and took the phone before driving off,” she said.

The next day police were alerted to another incident this time on Che Guevara Road in Berea were the same duo were described. “The exact same modus operandi was used. The two men who stopped a man who was walking along the road  were also described as in their thirties, driving a white Golf One with smoke tail lights and a scruffy interior. . This time the men said they were looking for a flat and the driver asked to borrow the man’s cellphone and when he refused they pointed a firearm at him,” said Manqele.

Manqele said the suspects are armed and could be dangerous. She advised anyone who spotted them to contact Crime Stop 10111 with information about their whereabouts immediately.
