Learning to be water wise

Hundreds of children from disadvantaged communities are being educated on water safety through the WaterWise Academy.

IN October Sea Rescue volunteer Jacqui McAllister joined the WaterWise Academy as an Instructor and in her first month has taught 689 children how to avoid a water related emergency.

NSRI’s WaterWise Academy, the proactive educational arm of Sea Rescue has taught over 435 388 children about water safety since its inception in 2006.

There are eight WaterWise Academy educators based around the country who visit classrooms of previously disadvantaged schools. Children who are 9 to 14 years old are targeted since they are most at risk of death by drowning.

Children are taught what to do in an emergency, who to call for help and how to initiate basic bystander CPR while they wait for an ambulance to arrive.

Jacqui has given the children who she has taught a basic understanding of what to do should they find themselves in an emergency and very importantly, how to identify and avoid rip currents as well as what to do if they or their friends are caught in one.
