City clean-up clears sidewalks

Shopowners who place merchandise on city sidewalks have been warned they are in contravention of the bylaws and will be fined.

SHOPOWNERS who place merchandise of city sidewalks were the focus of this week’s Clean My City Programme at Point and Addington. Metro Police fined businesses found contravening the bylaws relating to merchandise in front of stores and on city sidewalks without the necessary permission.

Metro Police’s Eugene Msomi warned shop owners they would be fined and police would confiscate goods found on the pavement as they obstructured pedestians.

Durban Solid Waste Education Officers conducted extensive education on the people who live around the city centre. The Manager of Durban Solid Waste, Simon Nyawo said people should understand the importance of rightfully disposing waste.

“Some of the shop owners said they do not have bins and a plan to provide bins is in progress. The businesses and community must work closely with the municipality to ensure that there is a reciprocal cooperation between citizens and the municipality. We always encourage businesses to clean their areas,” said Nyawo.

The operation forms part of ensuring that citizens live in a clean and well maintained environment. Repairing of inlets, broken signs and filling of potholes were amongst the issues which were tackled during the cleanup.
