THE Highway Hospice will host a Service of Remembrance at the Musgrave Methodist Church (corner of Musgrave and St. Thomas Road) from tonight (Thursday 7 November) from 6 to 7pm. The one hour service entails prayers (from different faiths) songs and lighting of candles. A children’s choir which brings a comforting effect is also part of the service.
The Highway Hospice Association provides a service designed to improve the quality of life for patients living with a terminal illness and support for their families. Care is provided by a dedicated team of nurses, doctors, social workers, an occupational therapist and volunteers. From its inception (1982) the mission of Hospice has been to serve all it’s communities, irrespective of race, religion, colour or creed.
An important part of the programme offered by Hospice focuses on bereavement. Pre bereavement and post bereavement counselling is offered to the families and significant others of patients. Mourning is an important part of bereavement. Bereaved families are contacted and offered supportive care and therapeutic counselling. A bereavement support group is held on a monthly basis at Sherwood and a remembrance service is held annually with families commemorating their loved ones. Memory work is also undertaken with children whose parents were Hospice patients.
