Life celebrated at charity breakfast
A fundraising event for the Sunflower Fund was held in Durban.
KEY Events held its seventh annual Sunflower Fund breakfast at Durban Country Club recently.
Entertainment was provided by Durban’s own songstress, Shelley McLean, who was accompanied by learners from Cowan House, and guest speaker, Jermaine Thomas, shared his inspiring story of courage with women who attended the event.
Jermaine (20) was diagnosed with acute myeloblastic leukaemia on 1 June last year and shared his journey over the past 10 months and together with guests celebrated the fact that he is now cancer free.

Jermaine said life over the past few months had been hell. He had to undergo chemotherapy, and was devastated by the loss of six friends who were undergoing treatment with him.
“There was very little to celebrate and planning for the future seemed fruitless, but I counted my blessings every day and lived for every second. I have found purpose through this experience and I know now what the meaning of my life is. I have new respect for people who have walked this journey,” he said.
Jermaine said having chemotherapy for eight months was harsh, but his fighting spirit wouldn’t allow him to give up.
“There were dark days but I knew this cancer would be defeated. I am proof you can succeed in anything, I am proof that giants can be slayed. I found strength in God and never lost my faith. Nothing is impossible.With God on your side, you can do anything,” he said.
