BAGPIPES and drums echoed around the Natal Mounted Rifles parade ground on Saturday 25 June at the Natal Scottish Gathering.
The event dates back to 1946 when the late Mr John Mudie started what was then known as the Durban Dancing Festival.
The Durban and Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Societies then got together and it was decided to rename it the Natal Scottish Gathering with the event taking place alternately each year in the respective towns.
Apart from the competing pipe bands and individual piping and drumming competitions there was also competitive Highland dancing and a massed band. There was also a display of military memorabilia for visitors to view.
