AS Durbanites, shaved, sprayed or wrapped their hair for a good cause, CANSA's Shavathon at various venues over the weekend, Berea Mail visited the volunteers at Musgrave Centre where much fun, laughter and survivor spirit was strong.
Eight-year-old Kyra Huges, was excited to participate in the Shavathon and was especially thrilled with her rainbow sprayed hair. “It is my first time and I love it,” she said.
While volunteers with a soft spot for the cancer cause shaved, sprayed and wrapped heads throughout the weekend, Anthony Dewing, a cancer survivor and CANSA volunteer said it was important to “give back.” “I've volunteered at CANSA since 2008 and never miss a Shavathon. My heart has always been with CANSA because they helped me when I was diagnosed. Its been eleven years since I have been in remission so now I'm here to support and help where I can,” he said.
Another breast cancer survivor, Heidi Du Plessis was happy to lend support to CANSA. “I'm a survivor, I've had a mastectomy in 2013, went through chemo and radiation and and so glad that my hair is grown back so I can spray it,” she added.
