Man arrested with undeclared R12-million

The 30-year-old man checked in seven bags filled with the local currency.

A MAN carrying an undeclared amount of R12 229 200 in his bags was arrested at King Shaka International Airport last Saturday.

The officials received information that a passenger was going to travel out of the country on the same afternoon with a large sum of South African currency that had not been declared at customs.

“Through intense investigation, the police officials traced the passenger to a flight that was leaving King Shaka Airport and was destined to land in Dubai,” said Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, spokesman for the regional SAPS.

“They approached the airline and the 30-year-old passenger was ordered to disembark the plane. His luggage was offloaded by airline staff.”

The passenger checked in seven bags which were scanned and all of the scans showed that they were all filled with local currency.

“The bags were opened in the presence of the passenger. The currency amounted to R12 229 200. The man was arrested and will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on charges of the contravention of the currency and exchange act.

The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, applauded the policemen for their sterling work which led to the arrest of the man. “We are ready to thwart any criminals during this festive season and beyond,” he said.
