Umbilo armed robbers reeled in within minutes

A pair of armed suspects were arrested by Umbilo police within no time after committing an alleged armed robbery at a Glenwood business on Tuesday.

WHEN Umbilo police officers on patrol in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Davenport area spotted a suspicious Toyota Taz and stopped to search the vehicle, they had no idea that the two suspects in the car had just robbed a business in Alan Paton Road..

According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the officers searched the vehicle and uncovered a 9mm pistol, a home-made revolver, twelve rounds of live of ammunition, a balaclava and okapi knife in the possession of the suspects.

“Upon arrival at the police station, it was discovered that the suspects had been involved in a business robbery a few minutes earlier (around 1.50am) at a business premises on Alan Paton Road where the security guard was robbed of his firearm. An undisclosed amount of cash was also taken during the robbery,” she said.

Gwala said the two suspects aged between 23 and 29 will be profiled to see if they are linked to any other robberies committed in the Umbilo and surrounding areas.

“They will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court this week for business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” she said.

The KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members for their vigilance that led to the arrest of the suspects. “We will continue with our operations as part of the festive season by making sure that the perpetrators of crime are brought to book,” Langa said.
