POINT police encourage the public to be exercise extra precautions when using ATMS especially during the upcoming festive season.
According to Captain Bheki Simelane, many recent incidents have been reported at the station where criminals use a similar modus operandi to distract people at ATMs.
“Do not allow strangers to assist you at the ATM, even if they are security guards, because we find some suspects are posing as security guards in uniform,” he said.
Simelane discouraged using ATMs in extremely quiet areas or over crowded areas where suspects could be found loitering.
“People must avoid using cellphones freely in public, this will decrease opportunistic smash and grab incidents,” he added.
