High tea raises funds for Hospice

Never underestimate the power of a pure intention.

AN unprecedented collaboration among community media houses, saw more than 200 women attend a high tea event at the Al Ansaar Hall in Overport recently to raise funds for Highway Hospice.

Islam Today Magazine, Cii volunteers Durban and The Al Ansaar Foundation joined forces with social media personality s.a.hijabi_lifestyle to co-ordinate the high tea which was put together in record time, solely on generous sponsorships from local businesses and home industries. The crowd was entertained by Dr Raeesa Aboobaker. Dr Sarah Fakroodeen enlightened all present about what the Hospice project was all about, as many present were unaware of how much the Highway Hospice is involved in with regards to care and management of cancer patients.

“I have been involved with charity for some time and have seen the work Hospice does across the board. I wanted to do something to give back to the community, and wanted to raise funds for Highway Hospice, as it is hands on, and makes a very big difference in the community. I really wanted the money to filter back down into the community,” said Safia Kazi.

The event was a resounding success, raising R50 000 for the Highway Hospice project. Al imdaad has committed a further R10 000 a month to the Hospice.

This event was the start of a relationship between the women in the community and the Highway Hospice. Women have now generously offered to cook for the weekly patients.
