Car thieves arrested in joint operation

Quick reaction by police led to the arrest of six suspects this week.

QUICK reaction by joint police units and a security company led to the arrest of six suspects found in possession of a stolen vehicle.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS, the vehicle was recovered a few hours after it was stolen in the Berea area in Durban.

On 24 November, Durban K9 Unit and Durban Flying Squad received information about a Toyota double cab vehicle which had been stolen from the Berea.
“The vehicle was spotted and the members gave chase towards the North Coast on the N2 freeway. Back-up was called and KwaDukuza Task Team and a security company joined the chase and together managed to intercept the vehicle near the Blythdale off-ramp in KwaDukuza,” said Zwane.

He said six suspects aged between 30 and 35 were arrested and the vehicle was recovered.
Zwane said the owner had parked his vehicle in the Berea and when he returned he noticed that the vehicle was gone.
“A description of the vehicle was circulated and police started to trace it. The victim also assisted during the chase,” said Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their swift reaction that led to the arrest of the suspects.
“The arrested suspects will be profiled to establish if they are not wanted for any other crimes in the province. The vehicle was recovered few hours after it was stolen which show the commitment by the team while performing they duties,” he said.
