Stokvel robbers to spend 10 years in jail

Two men were sentenced to ten years imprisonment each for armed robbery.

THE Durban Regional Court sentenced Eric Sakhumuzi Mbokazi (30) and Mthandeni Prince Mkhize (33) to ten years imprisonment each for armed robbery.

According to provincial SAPS spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane, on 5 December 2015 at approximately 7.05am, a woman and her brother were on their way to a supermarket in Overport to meet other stokvel members to divide the stokvel money.

“While they were walking along Jadhu Place, they were approached by the two men who demanded their money at gunpoint. They took the money which was in their possession and fled the scene. A case of armed robbery was opened for investigation by Mayville police,” he said.

Zwane said an intensive investigation was conducted and the accused were apprehended. Mbokazi and Mkhize made several court appearances until their sentencing.

“The community is warned that instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash from the banks to pay out money to their members they should rather transfer the money into their members’ bank accounts. Those members who do not have bank accounts should be encouraged to open them. We hope that this conviction will serve as a strong warning to the perpetrators of crime that crime does not pay,” said the KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
