Relief as Metro removes container business

Metro Police have removed the blue container from Teignmouth Road.

GRATEFUL residents breathed a sigh of relief as a blue container which has been on the pavement in Teignmouth Road, Umbilo, for the past two months, was removed on Thursday (27 October) morning.

Resident, Johan de Beer said he was very pleased to see Metro removing the unsightly blue container as it had been a blight on the neighbourhood, and as business (a salon) had started up at the container again recently.

According to ward councillor, Mmabatho Tembe, she was informed that the salon operating from the container was open again last week, and called Metro to follow up.

“Morgan Subramany from Metro Police said the owners of the container have a permit for a table and not a container, and he would get someone to have it towed,” she said.

The container was placed in Teignmouth Road around two months ago, and Tembe had warned the owner that it must go. Residents said the container appeared one morning, dropped by a pantechnicon, and a salon was opened which operated from 6am.

De Beer said he had approached the people working in the salon and told them they could not place the container in the road as it was a servitude, however they said the municipality had given permission for them to operate.

Another resident, Vivienne Upton-Watterson, sent numerous emails to the councillor and municipality during September to have the container removed and said she felt it should be impounded, as done with abandoned cars.
