Octogenarian’s wish to see the ocean granted

An elderly patient who was in Durban for treatment was lucky to have his wish of seeing the ocean granted after 35 years.

AN 84-year-old patient, who had been transferred to a Durban hospital from Newcastle, at the weekend had his wish of seeing the ocean come true when ER24 paramedics secured the exciting visit this morning.

According to Chitra Bodasing Harduth, spokesperson for ER24, Dirk Gunther’s wish was granted because the octogenarian had not seen the beach in 35 years.

“While being transferred from a hospital in Newcastle to one in Durban by ER24 on Sunday, Mr Gunther mentioned that he wished he could see the ocean as he had not in many years. Margery Meijerink, from ER24 Newcastle, said she would do her best to grant his wish. However, on the day, unsettled weather conditions which had been plagued with high tides did not allow the visit.”

Meijerink spoke to ER24 Durban branch manager, Jannes Prinsloo, who gladly assisted her in granting Gunther’s wish. “During the transfer back to Newcastle today (Tuesday), Lucas Nzimande and Shaun Naidoo, from ER24 Durban, stopped at the beach, allowing Mr Gunther to experience what he had not in so many years,” explained Harduth.
