SA lifesavers excel in world champs

Durban Surf won the youth interclub division at the Lifesaving World Championships held in the Netherlands.

SOUTH Africa’s oldest lifesaving club, Durban Surf won the youth inter-club division at the Lifesaving World Championships held in Noordwick and Eindhoven, Netherlands last week. 

Some 83 international clubs competed in surf and pool events over five days at this world champs which is held every two years. Durban Surf accumulated 15 medals and won the 2016 world champs by 255 points, won the title by 255 points ahead of second place Spanish team, Alcarreno de Salvamento. 
World champs is held every two years and in France in 2014 the Durban Surf Youth Team were placed third overall.

Eight of Durban Surf junior members also represented the South African Youth Team who competed against 22 different nations. The SA Junior team ranked 8th and boast five world medals. 

Tayla Gilmore, who was awarded the Junior Female Athlete of the Year by Lifesaving South Africa earlier this year and was the youngest competitor (aged 15) among all the international athletes, returned home with a gold, silver and bronze medal.

Winning this title is not a first for this notorious Lifesaving Club, and in 1996 and 2004 Durban Surf put its name on the international map. 
Devoted to vigilance and service Durban Surf provides lifesavers to one of the busiest beaches in South Africa.
