Local schools awarded for recycling efforts

Manor Gardens Primary School and Glenridge Pre-Primary School were finalists in WESSA's Water Explorer Programme.

A NATIONAL event for the WESSA Water Explorer Programme was held at the Durban Botanic Gardens recently.

The International Water Explorer programme is a fun, inspiring and educational programme that has empowered thousands of students across 11 countries to lead joint action on water issues for their schools and communities.

In September each year, the top five school teams in each country present their achievements to a national expert panel. Only one team can be selected as the national winner.

Bridget Ringdahl, project manager of Water Explorer, said: “Not only is this a great way to celebrate their Water Explorer journey’s but it is also a chance for the students to put presentation and other life skills into practise and share and inspire others about what they have done. In the case of SA this programme couldn’t be more important in light of the current drought we are experiencing.”

The five teams, Manor Gardens, Scottsville Primary, Hawkstone Primary, Glenridge Pre-Primary and St Peters Girls' School, showcased their work at the Durban Botanic Gardens where the winner, Scottsville Primary was announced.

All five teams won R5 000 with the top team winning R10 000. Scottsville will be attending the Water Explorer International Event in October.
